Adjustable lighting for sports and events

Flexibility, comfort, energy-efficiency. Lighting has a big significance in sport and event facilities. This was clear for Tampere Exhibition and Sports Centre, that recently renewed the lighting of three different halls on their premises.

The new lighting solution has the flexibility and adjustability needed in multipurpose venues. Depending on the sport or the requirements of the event, the managers can plan and set up ideal lighting levels for each individual luminaire. This way, the organisers are able to create multiple different lighting schemes to support each situation.

Multipurpose lighting for a multipurpose venue

Tampere Exhibition and Sports Centre (TESC) is one of the largest exhibition and sports centres in Finland. The premises are suitable for events of all types and sizes: from small group meetings, to seminars with hundreds of participants; from private parties to exhibitions and product launches — and everything in between.

TESC decided to renew the lighting of three of their halls because the former lighting did not support the needs of the multipurpose venue. With only the on/off-option available, there was no opportunity to adjust or dim the lighting for different events and situations. Moreover, the multi-metal lamps were releasing a lot of their energy as heat, resulting in higher temperatures in halls without a cooling system. On warm summer days with thousands of people, this was sometimes a real issue.

“The fact that LEDs emit very little heat was important to us. Especially in older halls, the comfort was sometimes disrupted with temperatures raising on warm summer days. Now we have one factor less causing the space to warm up.”

Mikko Savolainen, Technical Manager, Tampere Exhibition and Sports Centre

The new lighting solution at TESC is controlled with the ENCELIUMTM light management system. In practice, the luminaires of each hall are controlled through visual software with a three-dimensional graphical overview of the premises. With a push of a button, the managers can adjust, plan and set up ideal lighting levels for luminaire groups or each individual luminaire.

The opportunity to create multiple different lighting schemes has brought a lot of added value to the event organisers. With the new lighting, the organisers can highlight different areas or dim particular luminaires according to the needs. As an example, in shooting competitions dimming a particular luminaire helps prevent glare while brightening another is crucial to see the target well enough. For TESC, the organisation of such events with special demands has become a lot easier.

“Luminaire by luminaire, we can now decide what to do with the lighting. This has been great for us, and the event organisers have been really happy with the opportunities. From our point-of-view, organising various events with special lighting demands has become a lot easier and requires less manual work.”

The lighting renewal of Tampere Exhibition and Sports Centre was provided as a turnkey service by Greenled, including the planning, delivery, installation and commissioning of the lighting solution. With their positive experiences, TESC plans to renew the lighting of the remaining two halls in the near future and bind the entire facility under the same lighting control system.
